During Anti-Bullying Week, we focused on "using our powers for good", but also eSafety and combating cyber bullying. This was inspired by the recent BBC News article about the increase in cyber bullying and the number of children who are affected, and also our recent trip to Crucial Crew. We shocked the children with how vulnerable they are on line. They could not believe how many of their photographs and conversations we could get hold of, just because they had not made their online profiles private. They were also astounded at how easy it was to set up an account in anybody's name and how easily they all fell for it. Hopefully, they have learnt from this and will be more careful with their online lives from now on! The children then worked in groups to create "anti-bullying campaigns". The work they produced ranged from good old fashioned posters to videos and memes. See below for some of our favourites. We were very proud of our year sixes this morning. They did a fabulous job of their final class assembly, which showcased all their talents, from sketching skills to research to writing to acting to dancing and singing! A small group of girls even gave up their lunch breaks for the last week to choreograph the dance entirely by themselves.
Thank you to parents who ruined (hopefully) old clothes in order to create our scruffy street urchins! We hope you enjoyed the performance. Year 6 had a fabulous time at the National Coal Mining Museum on Thursday! After nervously boarding the "cage", they descended 160m underground to discover what mining was like in Victorian times. Strangely, none of them fancied the job of the "Trapper", which involved sitting in the dark for a 12 hour shift, opening and closing the door to let the harriers through with their loads of coal. A family only had one candle between them, and that would be used by the father, who would need it to see the coal he was hacking from the pit face. After we ascended back to ground level, highlights included meeting the pit ponies and looking at modern day mining machinery. There were a few nerves as we prepared to ride the cage!
