Design and Technology (DT) is all about learning to think creatively and solving problems individually and as a member of a team. Our children are encouraged to look for opportunities and needs in order to improve the quality of life and to become informed users of products and innovators of our future. They will handle a wide range of materials (e.g. paper, fabric, plastic) to find out about their properties and suitability for purpose. They are progressively taught practical skills such as cutting and joining and use these in their topic work. Pupils are encouraged to be creative, taking into account how their products look and would appeal to others, and then evaluate their work so that they can be improved.
Food Technology. Another important aspect of DT is to provide opportunities for preparing and cooking healthy food. At each school stage they will learn basic food preparation skills such as peeling and chopping, and go on to develop a range of cooking techniques, such as kneading when making bread. Children are taught about nutrition which includes using the basic principles of a healthy diet to prepare simple snacks and dishes. They will also learn about where our food comes from.
