In preparation for this activity we froze some pots of water with little monsters inside. To begin we wrapped one of the ice blocks in tinfoil and passed it around for the children to feel. The words they used to describe it were very descriptive - cold, slippery, damp, freezing, crumpled, heavy, drippy, wet. This was before we even unwrapped it!
These were the questions we investigated.
Where do you think this water is coming from?
Why are your hands cold and wet?
What will make the ice melt?
Would anything make the ice melt faster?
How can we get the monster out of the ice?
The photos show the children using their senses to explore the ice. It was such a popular activity, the concentration shown by the children was amazing.
