We spent an absolutely brilliant day at Cannon Hall yesterday being evacuees! The children participated in four different activities: In "Rationing", we made carrot biscuits using our weekly rations. The carrots bulked them out, made them tasty, and were easy to get hold of because you could grow your own! We then learned about why things were rationed during the war, what was rationed and how people dealt with it. Did you know that it was illegal to waste food during rationing? In "War Messages" we learnt all about Morse Code - how it was used, who invented it and how to use it ourselves. We decoded messages, changed messages into Morse Code, and used torches to send our own messages. We also looked at posters and slogans from the war and used these to design our own posters, which we will finish back at school. "Make Do and Mend" taught us about how hard it was to get hold of new clothes during rationing. We made a rag rug and learnt to darn a sock, as well as looking at artefacts from the time. In our final activity, "Toys and Games", we learnt how different entertainment was 80 years ago! Despite there being no tablets or phones, we actually really enjoyed playing with marbles, tiddlywinks, jacks and various other games, including Monopoly! It really was a wonderful day, but we were very relieved to be told at the end that it was just a drill, and that we could go home to our families this time! What a wonderful place to be evacuated to though!
A massive thank you to all parents / carers / guardians who did fabulous jobs with the children's outfits. It really contributed to making the day more special.

Our history continue in Year 5 when we started to look at how the war changed the roles of people left in Britain. We began by looking at jobs and used a Venn diagram to decide who we thought would have done those jobs. We were surprised to learn that women took most of the roles as the men were away fighting. Did you know that Queen Elizabeth was a mechanic during World War 2?
As part of our World War 2 topic, in Year 5 we have been looking at the allied and axis forces during this conflict. We used our acquired map skills to locate the countries who supported Britain and those that supported Germany during the war. We also looked at neutral countries and ones which were invaded by the allied forces.
In computing over the last few weeks, Y5 have been creating PowerPoint presentations to encourage everyone to follow the Golden Rules. They thought carefully about what following each rule looked like and why it was important to keep to it. Each pair and group demonstrated excellent team work, combining their ideas together and listening to each other carefully.
Today Year 5 consolidated and extended their locational knowledge of Europe. We looked at maps and matched flags to their country. We finished with a quiz to see how much we’d learnt by the end of the session.
Our first day back happened to be the 80th anniversary of the start of World War 2. Early on in the war (and even shortly before it began), many children were evacuated from major cities to live with relatives or strangers in the countryside. We thought about what we would pack in our suitcases if this were to happen now. We then looked at the packing lists from 1939 and compared them. Finally we made and "packed" suitcases according to the packing lists! The children worked in pairs initially to help each other draw around the template. They showed superb team work and supported each other brilliantly.
Year 5 had lots of fun recently, taking part in World Book Day. We dressed up as our favourite book characters, read with the little ones further down school and took part in a scavenger hunt in the school library! Having watched a video about sundials, Y5 decided they wanted to investigate how and why shadows move and change during the day. We had a wonderful day drawing around our shadows at different times, measuring them and comparing them. We found out that they move depending on where the sun is in the sky. When the sun is low (in the morning and the afternoon), the shadows are longer. When the sun is higher in the sky (around midday) the shadows are shorter.
This half term, our Design and Technology project has been all about sewing! We started by learning about how to create different stitches, then thought about what we could use them for. We also learnt how to sew a button on. We designed Christmas decorations, thinking about which stitches to use for different parts of them. Our stunning, completed Christmas decorations were attached to the Christmas cards that we made for our families; they loved them! On Monday 12th November, Year 5 joined Year 2 to visit Wombwell cemetry to take part in a remembrance service. We took wreaths, which we had made in class. Some of us also took the rocks we made during the family fun session. The service marks the end of our World War two topic. It has been a brilliant topic and we have learnt so much. We can't wait for the next one!
