Well we have all made it through our first week of home learning and lockdowns. It has been a very strange week for everyone, I am sure you will all agree.
There is so much out there to help you with your learning at home and I do hope you've made use of some of it. Here are just some of the wonderful pictures I have received this week. Thank you so much for sharing them with me. It is lovely to see you all not only working hard but also enjoying time creating memories during these difficult times. Stay safe everyone.

Wow what a treat we have had today. We are so lucky at High View because today we have had the pleasure of the West End Dance in School company to work with our lovely children. We had researched our book "Where the Wild Things Are" in readiness. What a treat we had! From choreography to a full dance, it was great from start to finish. Check out some of our moves. What a fabulous turn out to our parent workshop, thank you so much. As you can see we all had a great time creating our replicas of houses from back in 1666. It was great to see so many of you deeply engaged and enjoying making them.
What a great way for our new topic to start! A letter arrived via courier from the firm "GFOL Builders" informing the children they wanted to build homes on our playground. You can imagine the great debate that this struck up! What on earth? We were asked to make models in our workshop of houses to replicate what they wanted to build. We were all somewhat puzzled.
Then that very same afternoon, a mystery parcel arrived with lots of very odd items. What did all this mean? Some children think there was a fire in London and that the builders are some relations. We're going to have to travel back in time and become detectives for this one. Watch this space. What a wonderful day we've had at Weston Park Museum discovering more about toys through time! We spent some time acting as museum curators looking at a range of old, new and unique toys. We got the chance to play with a huge range of toys, some of our favourites were the Jacob's ladder, Russian dolls, yoyo, skip ball, spinning tops, plastic jointed snakes and kaleidoscopes. We looked at features of toys that helped us decide how old toys were such as the materials they were made from. Whilst we looked around the museum and discussed different materials toys were made from we noticed that some of the oldest toys were made from clay, lot's of children thought this was an unsuaitable material to make a toy from as it is very fragile. When we were curating toys we noticed however, that there weren't any clay toys to look at so we had a go at making our very own noughts and crosses games from clay. We had a really super day at Weston Park Museum and will be displaying some of our learning on the corridor! A huge thankyou to any adults that came and supported us at our fantastic parent workshop this morning. After learning about Dolls through time this week we had a go at designing and making our own peg dolls. The children very carefully investigated the best materials to dress their dolls in and followed the specification of their peg dolls being in a style of a popular type of doll. We had many super heroes modelled on action figures and lots of mermaids. Take a look at our fantastic designs, we can't wait to display them in the corridor. This week we have been learning about measure. We discovered that when measuring weight we can use weighing scales and a range of different units such as grams or kilograms. We tested out our measuring knowledge by baking some delicious buns, measuring all the ingredients ourselves, to sell at our bake sale tomorrow. Our bake sale is in aid of raising money for an exciting workshop in the new half term. We have really got stuck into our new topic this week and began to think about toys and where it all began. Do you know how long toys have been around? Do you think they had toys in the war? Ask your children to tell you about what they have learnt so far.
We talked about the different kinds of toys there are and within a few minutes we had a long list. We set the children a challenge to name as many toys as they can. We can't wait to see how many they come up with! Many examples of toys led to debates about whether they were toys; stickers were a really interesting example and led to a good discussion. Whatever the toy...one main thing we could spot is how they have changed through time - ever changing technology of materials. We cannot wait to learn more. In just a week the children have done amazingly! Many of them had more than one part, they went home, learnt their words, practised hard in school - remembered their lines without their words, did a fab Zumba and sang lovely. We are so, so proud of them for producing such an outstanding assembly. We hope you are as proud as we are, they are a credit to you. So it seems the children's toys just couldn't resist getting up to mischief in High View. These are some of the clips we snipped from the security cameras. You can imagine the children's faces when they saw what the toys had been up to! What a great writing hook for our literacy work! :-) |
