In year five, we take internet safety very seriously. We have done lots of work in class on it this year, but Safer Internet Day gave us the opportunity to recap and think more deeply about our internet use. We discussed different online scenarios, thought about people's importance online and decided that our friends and family mean the most to us.
We then thought about our wishes to make the internet a safer and happier place, and then what we (along with internet companies) could do to achieve this.

To introduce our new history topic of the Anglo-Saxons, Year 5 were given a mystery to solve. They had to find out the person who was buried at the famous burial site at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk. We studied all the pieces of evidence we had and discussed what it showed us and what we could deduce from it. Then, just like a detective would, we eliminated the possible suspects before we were left with the most likely person: Raedwald. We realised that we had to use our inference skills from reading in order to be successful. It's true what we keep being told - reading is everywhere!
After tasting and researching foods from different North American countries, it was time to plan our menus! The children worked in groups of five to find recipes for a starter and main course. They can't wait to cook and taste them after half term!
In maths we have been looking at mental methods to multiply. Some of us really took to the partitioning method, whereas others wanted a bit more support to feel confident. So, we paired up to help each other. It meant that everybody who wanted a bit of extra support got some and those of us who were confident became better at explaining and reasoning or understanding.
In PSHCE / eSafety, we have been learning about the trails we leave behind us on the internet, the reputation it gives us. We filled in our "Digital Footprints", then looked at the problems they could create, before adding advice on how to keep them positive.
In English, we've been writing reports about the Solar System. Before we began, we spent time exploring the library to find the features of non-fiction texts.
In RE, Year 5 are starting to look at Judaism. We began our journey into this religion by looking at their sacred books. We discovered that Jewish people use stories from the old testament. Their holy book is called a Torah. Because the stories are the same, we explored them in the bible and compared them to the stories in the new testament.
In maths, we are extending our learning of measurement by looking at area. We are experts at finding the area of a rectangle but what if we have one that looks similar to a rectangle but has more sides? We need to break the shape down into rectangles. So, to become experts at finding rectangles in a rectilinear shape, we practised at splitting our classroom into rectangles!
In DT, Year 5 are going to be testing our culinary skills! We are going to design and make a menu based on cuisine from North America (which is where we are learning about in geography). Before we can make the food, it's only fair we get a little taste of some new dishes! Some were definitely more popular than others, though there wasn't much left after we had finished!
Starting our new maths learning (measurement), we realised that we needed to get a little bit more accurate at using a ruler. So (and don't tell Miss Smith), we started drawing lines of specific length on the....table!! We then went round and checked that all the lines were the correct length. We are now experts on measuring...even to the nearest mm!
