As part of our learning in RE, we walked to different places of worship in Wombwell to find out more about them. We visited St Mary's Church, the Methodist Church and we also visited Wombwell Cemetery. We met some very interesting people whilst we were there. Some people work at the church or the cemetery and others volunteer. They do lots of very good and important work there. We talked about the importance of being respectful by making sure we do not let dogs run free in the cemetery or drop any rubbish on the floor. We also talked about how we can help to look after the wildlife for example, feeding the squirrels in the trees or trying not to walk on the plants. We found out that although it is a very peaceful, interesting place to visit, it is not somewhere we should be playing. Ellie, a lady who works at the Methodist Church, told us all about the different services that are held there. We even had a pretend wedding and christening! Ellie went on to explain what everything in the church was for and when it is used. She introduced us to the organist who is called Les. He played a few tunes on the organ and some of us sang along. Les then explained how the organ works and how much care it needs.
There was a lot to find out about and our teachers said we asked excellent questions to find out more. After Lunch we walked to St Mary's Church where we compared what we had seen in the Methodist Church with what they have in St Mary's. There were lots of things that looked different but were used for the same thing. St Mary's Church is much bigger and older but they have the same services and also have many people who volunteer there. Some people even bring flowers and arrange them before a service. Other people come to the church to ring the bell in the bell tower. While we were there we visited the cenotaph which we had been talking about during remembrance. There were lots of poppy wreaths which people in the local community had left on Remembrance Sunday. We tried to spot names that we recognise from the soldiers names included on the cenotaph. We found out a lot of new information about churches, volunteers and the cemetery and it helped us to understand that people enjoy being part of a community.

This week it has been Anti-Bullying Week and we have spent some time discussing what this is and what it means to us.
We have talked about what bullying is and what to do if we feel like we are being bullied such as telling a friend or asking a teacher for help. We had a circle time talking about what makes a 'good friend'. We made bricks with sentences about a 'good friend' to build a friendship wall. The main theme we looked at was being unique. We shared ideas about things that make us special and unique - we learnt that it is OK to be different because we all are! To celebrate our individuality we all made a link that would become part of a paper chain. We designed it so it was special to us, including different things we like and enjoy. After we made our own, we teamed up with a partner and found out more about what made them special - we then made a link just for them! After all our links were made, we put them together to show that although we are all different and unique we all make one big team! Today we walked to Wombwell Cemetery to take part in a minutes silence for Remembrance Day. We walked to the cemetery with Year 5. We tried to find a partner who we didn't know very well which meant most of us made a new friend on the journey because we had lots of time to chat and get to know each other. Earlier in the week we had made poppy wreaths at school which we wrote messages on. We took them with us to place at the war memorial to show our respect. We all then participated in the one minute silence and listened carefully to the readings and the music afterwards. We knew all about the sacrifice the soldiers made and are still making for us because we have been finding out about why we have Remembrance Day at school. We all agree that it is a very special time and we should never forget what these people have done and are still doing for our country and the people in it. It was exciting to see the British Legion Members and a few soldiers in their uniform and to find out about their medals which they had on their jackets. Everyone was very friendly and although it can be sad to remember those who have died or been injured it was also very interesting to find out more about their work. |
